How to Overcome a Reader’s Block

Writer: itswinter88itswinter88

Are you trying to read a book but it is too boring to read anymore? Or are you finding it too hard to even grab the book and continue reading? Or even start with a new book? In simple words, do you feel like you want to read a book but can’t do it?

Then yup, you’ve got a reader’s block. It's something that a group of people in the society that reads, often referred to as “bookworms”, goes through once in a while. Now, why do people end up in this “block”? Possibilities are you might be trying to read a book that doesn’t actually interest you i.e., not your “type” of books/ you are trying to read for the sake of reading and not for enjoying the book i.e., a reading assignment, maybe/ you are a beginner in reading and you got yourselves a gigantic book just because it looks cool or people all over the internet promoted it. (Well, these are some of the reasons why I ended up with a reader’s block a few times)

So, one of the solutions is to make sure you read with a relaxed head. Don’t try to read when you're having a cluttered/stressed mind. It can sometimes put more pressure when you try to watch the scenes from the book in your head when your head instead just wants to get some rest. But hey, there are a lot of people who read just to relax and “escape the reality” (and by lot, I mean a LOT lot), and if you belong to that category of people, then good for you!

Another solution would be to find a good reading spot. I prefer sitting next to the windows where you can get a ton of natural lighting. Try throwing in a few cushions and light up your favorite candle – just make yourselves a little cozy corner however you prefer that.

The third solution – do a little bit of research on your own based on the genre of books that you enjoy. Maybe go for a book suggested by one of your friends who's got the same taste in books as you. Check for reviews if you prefer (I personally don’t read reviews of books that I'm interested in because I don’t want somebody else’s opinion on it to bias over how I truly feel about the book while I read it). Read the book description and if that intrigues you, you should be good to go.

Next, don’t ever ever ever read for the purpose of reading. Don’t be like “Oh, it’s a new month, I HAVE to read a book.” Read books when you NEED one... when you desperately want to live in the reality of a book and be one among those characters in it... when you want to listen to their stories. Read because you want to enjoy the book or attain knowledge from it so that the chances of you ending up in a reader’s block is less.

And most importantly don’t try to read a book just because it has got a beautiful cover because the outside can be deceptive, honey.

If none of these solutions work for you then, simply give it a break. Yup, sometimes staying away from books helps to have a better experience reading a book the next time you pick up one. And sometimes go outside, go for a walk and be a part of some beautiful stories outside the book. :)
